Our CIO, Brian McGeough, is on a tour of speaking engagements to share with and learn from peers about how technology is evolving, how companies are adapting to AI, and the ingredients needed to build a successful and innovative company today.<\/b><\/p>

The events offer a space for a candid, peer-to-peer reality check on what\u2019s working, what\u2019s not, and what\u2019s about to change the game.<\/p>

Across a run of conversations with other technology leaders from the CIO Exchange to AI-focused forums in Dublin, Brian\u2019s answers circled back to a few key ideas: speed matters, data quality does too, and \u201cresponsible AI\u201d may be in the headlines, but it\u2019s really good engineering practice with a new coat of paint!<\/p>

Here\u2019s what he shared across themes of AI, innovation, events, and culture, and the simple (occasionally blunt) lessons he thinks matter most right now for Creditsafe and other companies offering software solutions.<\/p>

1) The Value of Peer-To-Peer Events<\/strong><\/h3>

Brian has always been deliberate about the events he attends, and that discipline goes back to the very start of his career.<\/p>

\u201cSpeaking of events, it\u2019s something I\u2019ve always tried to do all throughout my career. Even going back to my earliest days with Intel, I used to participate in what they called the IT@Intel programme. It was really a sales and marketing tool for Intel itself, but for me, it gave me the opportunity to speak very candidly \u2014 because I wasn\u2019t selling anything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

That absence of an agenda, he says, is what changes the quality of the conversation.<\/p>

\u201cI was just explaining how a large organisation like Intel \u2014 and now, in today\u2019s environment, how an enterprise like Creditsafe \u2014 struggles with technology. It\u2019s always a much better situation to be in when you can talk to a peer group and just share practice: \u201cThis is how I do it. How do you do it? What challenges have you experienced?\u201d.<\/em><\/p>

\u201cIn most cases, you gain a lot more credibility because you\u2019re not there trying to sell anything. You\u2019re just there as another peer who has had experience in an area somebody\u2019s interested in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

For Brian, Peer-To-Peer offers the best experience:<\/p>

\u201cBe very choosy. Go to events that are not sponsored by X supplier. When it\u2019s truly peer-to-peer dialogue, you\u2019ll get the most value from it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

2) Any Good AI Is Founded On Great Data<\/strong><\/h3>

Those peer conversations, he says, offer a place for validating and stress-testing our thinking and plans for new tech, and how they get challenged when they collide with reality.<\/p>

\u201cA lot of times you go in with a preconceived idea of where you\u2019re taking things. One of the most recent discussions was around responsible AI, and there was a lot of debate about how cautious we need to be when we scale.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

What surprised him was where the debate consistently went:<\/p>

\u201cThe discussion quickly got to: it\u2019s not really about the tools, or the capabilities and features. It\u2019s really about the data.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cEverybody says data is important \u2014 garbage in, garbage out \u2014 but you cannot go and automate and build agents to consume data that\u2019s not of good quality. That might seem obvious, but when you start drilling into real use cases, it becomes very real very quickly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Hearing others talk openly about their mistakes makes the path clearer.<\/p>

\u201cWhen others are speaking about very similar challenges and how they\u2019ve overcome them, it makes the whole journey more understandable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cAI a year or two ago was all about discovery \u2014 \u2018look at all these cool things we can do\u2019. Now it\u2019s about figuring out how we do those cool things without letting ourselves down at the back end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

3) What CIOs Must Get Right In 2026<\/strong><\/h3>

Ahead of the CIO Exchange, Brian took part in an interview on what CIOs must get right before 2026, and Brian\u2019s message is to be enthusiastic about the new possibilities tech offers, but temper it with a focus on the actual business impact it has.<\/p>

\u201cA CIO has to be much more in tune with the business demand in terms of where they\u2019re trying to gain efficiencies. \u201cBusinesses are much more squeezed. They\u2019re trying to get more with less.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cYou have to go into the business and help people understand the specific tasks they do day to day that don\u2019t really need a person doing them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

For Creditsafe, this is something that affects our pace both technically and commercially:<\/p>

\u201cWe want to increase the velocity at which technology can deliver capabilities to our products and services. By incorporating AI tooling into how we build, I expect productivity gains of somewhere between 10, 15, 20 percent over the next 12 to 18 months.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Brian refers to one of Cato\u2019s favourite quotes to underscore the importance of this focus:<\/p>

\u201cThere\u2019s only two companies in the world today \u2014 the fast and the dead. We have to be agile, and we have to be fast.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

4) On AI Strategy: Start Inside Before You Go Outside<\/strong><\/h3>

Reflecting on some AI-focused events, Brian\u2019s keeps a deliberately consistent message:<\/p>

\u201cFrom a Creditsafe perspective, we\u2019ve really prioritised our focus on internal efficiencies and productivity gains…We\u2019ve been somewhat hesitant about putting AI in front of customers as an entry point.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cYou\u2019ll see competitors putting AI bots in front of their websites, but it\u2019s really just window dressing. There\u2019s no real substance behind it. You can give the same response through a web page.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

That doesn\u2019t mean customer AI is off the table, however!<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s not \u2018no\u2019. It\u2019s \u2018not yet\u2019. And certainly not lazily!\u201d<\/em><\/p>

5) And Make Sure AI Is Truly Valuable for Customers!<\/strong><\/h3>

Brian is clear that AI should enhance and not replace the stuff that already works.<\/p>

\u201cAI will always be complementary to our products and services. It should enrich what customers are already doing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

The most obvious starting point is support:<\/p>

\u201cHow do we make customers get information faster? Things like managing an integration to our Connect API. Today, they might trawl documents or wait for a call back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s much easier to have that information available through an AI bot that can answer 80 or 90 percent of questions straight away.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

But accountability remains key:<\/p>

\u201cNo matter what happens, if the bot can\u2019t give the answer, there\u2019s always a human at the other end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Providing insights, meanwhile, needs more caution:<\/p>

\u201cWe need to be very careful we\u2019re not doing anything to jeopardise compliance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

6) Innovation Lives Everywhere<\/strong><\/h3>

Brian has a refreshing angle on what innovation is and where you find it:<\/p>

\u201cInnovation lives everywhere. It has to be top-down and bottom-up. If you create a group that \u2018does innovation\u2019, you\u2019ve already lost.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

That mindset underpins initiatives at Creditsafe like Innovation Day:<\/p>

\u201cPeople come with ideas to make anything better \u2014 a process, a capability, a product \u2014 and we turn the best of those ideas into something tangible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Operational innovation across teams also excites him:<\/p>

\u201cIn TechOps, we\u2019re exploring how AI agents can interrogate and triage major incidents before they even happen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

The impact is cognitive as much as it is productive and technical.<\/p>

\u201cIt removes the mundane work \u2014 staring at screens, checking logs \u2014 and lets engineers focus on reliability and being proactive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

7) Innovation, Culture, And Time<\/strong><\/h3>

Brian believes the culture already exists at Creditsafe:<\/p>

\u201cThere is that culture of innovation and continuous improvement across the business. People are always asking how to make things better.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

He makes a creative link between time and creativity:<\/p>

\u201cThe only way we get time to innovate is by removing the work that isn\u2019t innovative.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Brian also believes innovation and reducing risks can go hand in hand for a business:<\/p>

\u201cTake incident management for example, getting to 0 major incidents is ambitious yes, but the aspiration\u00a0gets us closer by driving key changes and revisiting and refining what is working.\u201d <\/em><\/p>

Put another way, innovation doesn\u2019t just push positive outcomes but can also transform and reduce negative outcomes.<\/p>

8) Make Everything Better By Being Selfish About AI<\/strong><\/h3>

When it comes to how we can use AI at an individual level, Brian\u2019s message is personal:<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019d encourage people to really embrace and understand how AI is going to make them better in their careers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

And his advice is refreshingly direct and well meaning!<\/p>

\u201cBe selfish about it. Think about how the next six, nine, twelve months could look if you adopt these tools. How your job gets easier. How the tedious parts shrink.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

\u201cJust embrace the technology that\u2019s ahead of you now \u2014 because it\u2019s always going to make your job so much easier.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Brian\u2019s tech tour is about the conferences and more; they are locus points for the sharing of the wider story that\u2019s unfolding in the tech space right now, where the pace of change AI can deliver needs to be founded on the right data, culture, and compliance practices. <\/strong><\/p>
